Fish and Chips must be one of the best take-away foods ever and we reckon each one of these spots will swear they have they have the best chips in the city. Regardless we love fish and chips and we actually judge them by the quality of the fish, not the venue or the scenery or the quality of how well they have wrapped our fish and chips parcel. All of them are excellent! Enjoy.
Fish and chips have fed millions and created memories worldwide . Sometimes they are a treat at the end of the work week, sometimes they are a late-night supper on the way home and for some fish and chips are the memory of a seaside holiday.
White fish in crisp golden batter, served with a generous portion of hot fluffy chips are irresistible. Fish and chip shops don’t get trendy articles in foodie mags and food bloggers don’t tweet about them. It’s basic, it’s fresh, they’re plain paper-wrapped parcels, they are “fast food” and “take-aways” and they are relatively inexpensive. The most commonly used fish are hake or snoek and each has a local-is-lekker emotional feeling attached to the purchase.
Here’s our list of Fish and chips outlets in our neighbourhood - Hout Bay. Lucky for us we don't have to travel far to access the best of the best!
Snoekies: Hout Bay
Situated in Hout Bay Harbour, Snoekies is the oldest Fish and Chips outlet that we are aware of (I believe they opened in 1951 as a converted Caravan. The idea was to sell snacks and coffee to the local fishermen before and after they boarded their fishing boats. Snoekies is still situated at the far end of the harbour and there is a cosmopolitan mix of people queuing for their traditional fish and chips wrapped in newspaper. It’s a great idea to get your wrapped parcel and head to Chapman’s Peak Drive or find a spot in the bustling harbour to enjoy your meal!

Mariner’s Wharf Bistro (& Fish market): Hout Bay
This bustling bistro serves take-away fish and chips on the wharfside at the end of Hout Bay beach and the start of the harbour. Actually they serve more than fish and chips but it’s tried and tested for fish and chips and not to be missed by either locals or tourists. The queue can be quite long but it moves quickly and there is a wonderful atmosphere with the outside tables and fantastic views. Do watch out for the greedy seagulls who might just help themselves to your meal! If you are a fish and chips fan – do pop into the fishmarket inside the wharf which sells oak-smoked snoek and homemade fishcakes which are to die for!

Fish on the Rocks, Hout Bay
This yellow building at the end of Harbour Road in Hout Bay is another fantastic harbour based fish and chip shop that offers cheap and cheerful, yet mouth-wateringly delicious fish and chips. It’s always a happy melting pot of local fishermen, bikers on coastal runs, Hout Bay locals and visiting tourists tucking into large portions of fish and chips served proudly in paper and cardboard boxes with plastic cutlery. Fish on the Rocks also has a long history and the walls are lined with family photos so you immediately feel part of the community. Sit at one of the wooden tables and if you are lucky some visiting minstrels could drop in unannounced to play for you. Fish on the Rocks serves grilled meals, calamari and tiger prawns too! All delicious.
